The Labour in Vain Hotel is situated in Brunswick Street in the heart of Fitzroy. A vibrant and welcoming venue for people of all walks of life – musical and otherwise.
Our intimate bar stocks the finest seasonal Beers (12 on tap), Wines, Spirits and Liqueurs.
It’s a place where you can check out a band or sit down and strike up a conversation with people of all ages and backgrounds and musical persuasions. Or just grab a stool in the front bar and watch the world go by.
During all seasons, our roof top Beer Garden is a comfortable space to enjoy a drink and check out the city views. It is undercover, heated in Winter and misters in Summer. A smoking area, if that’s the way you roll.
Alternatively, stay at our front bar and play a game of pool. One of the rare pool tables left in Fitzroy.
Live Music
The Labour in Vain is one of Melbourne best-loved original live music venues. The shows are all free of charge and the music programming is as wild and diverse as our customers.
You never know what style of music you’re going to hear when you walk into the venue to watch a gig. We could have a huge international star playing a sneaky sideshow, blistering sets from Australia’s punk rock legends, quiet and intimate solo folk sets, young muso’s playing their first rock shows.

Do we do Food? - No we don’t have a kitchen but we are happy for you to order in from your favourite restaurant.
Can I make a Reservation?- Not at this stage. Walk-ins only.
Do we have a Beer Garden? - Yes we have a beer garden. Heated in the Winter and water mists in the summer.
